Position TypeFaculty Work Hours/Week40 Description of Work Unit The department is a highly respected unit in the College of Liberal Arts. A strong professional skills curriculum serves 450+ majors in an ACEJMC -accredited undergraduate program. A fully online undergraduate program launched in 2018 and currently serves an additional 70 undergraduate students. Roughly 50 graduate students are enrolled in the residential M.S. program in Journalism and Media Communication, and a Ph.D. program in Media Communication. A professionally focused Master's in Communication and Media Management ( MCMM ) is offered remotely and serves roughly 40 students at any given time. Programs offer expertise in journalism, public relations, advertising, television, specialized media production, and writing. The department is the home of the Center for Science Communication and is an active partner in the Colorado School of Public Health and the Information Science and Technology Center (ISTeC)-a university-wide consortium involved in information technology education, research, and outreach. Additional partnerships connect the department with Student Media; External Relations; Music, Theater, and Dance; campus-based research superclusters; Sociology; Latin American Studies; Ethnic Studies; Women's Studies; the School of Global Environmental Sustainability ( SOGES ), the College of Agricultural Sciences; and several other prominent university departments and initiatives. The department leads academic minors in Music, Stage, and Sports Production; Information Science and Technology; and Science Communication; and participates in minors in Film Studies and Media Studies. Faculty members are highly active in research, publication, professional communication, and public service, as well as academic and professional communication organizations at the state, regional, national, and international levels. The Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education has recognized the unique character of the department's master's and Ph.D. programs as Western Regional Graduate Programs. The applied, remotely delivered MCMM master's program offers additional teaching opportunities through both synchronous and asynchronous delivery. With six dedicated computer labs, access to a television studio, and a wide range of production equipment available for student checkout, the department provides excellent computer, multimedia, and video production capabilities for teaching, research, and creative media production. The initial contract will be for two to three years, with the possibility of moving to a continuing appointment or another contract appointment, contingent on performance reviews during the initial contract period. This is a nine-month appointment with the potential for summer teaching. The faculty member will provide strategic leadership for the department's media production programs through teaching, advising, and industry engagement. Oversees academic initiatives, develops campus and external partnerships, represents the department in professional organizations, and contributes to administrative planning, equipment oversight, and creative production in the field of journalism and media communication. The faculty member will carry a 3/3 teaching load, depending on workload expectations from the department and the College of Liberal Arts. The candidate will teach courses supporting the department's curriculum in streaming, TV and video production, news and sports broadcasting, and documentary and narrative film as well as core courses in the major. The faculty member will also advise the Music, Stage, and Sports Production minor, assist in undergraduate recruiting, and pursue internship and career relationships with relevant media organizations. This faculty member will foster campus and media industry partnerships that may result in new revenue streams. represent the department in professional organizations, and contribute to administrative planning, and equipment oversight. The faculty member will also be expected to participate in their own creative production in the field of journalism and media communication. Conditions of EmploymentPre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires) Required Job Qualifications + Bachelor's degree in a media-related field, including journalism, filmmaking, media production, or communication. + Five years of professional experience in media production, broadcast news, or multimedia storytelling, demonstrating creative talent and technical expertise. + Evidence of teaching undergraduate filmmaking, multimedia production, broadcast news, or related courses. + Evidence of professional recognition for excellence in media production. + Demonstrated ability to mentor students in professional, creative, or experiential learning environments (e.g., live productions, documentary film projects, internships). + Demonstrated communication skills and ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with media organizations and campus partners. Additional Minimum Qualifications for Associate Professor Position + Six or more years of professional media production experience across media organizations, platforms, or formats (e.g., news, sports, documentary, streaming, or narrative film). + Minimum of five years of full-time university teaching experience in media production or related fields. + Documented record of teaching effectiveness, demonstrated through evaluations or a teaching portfolio. + Evidence of professional recognition for excellence in media production at the regional or national level. + Demonstrated leadership in curriculum development, supervision of student media projects, or coordination of production-focused academic initiatives. Preferred Job Qualifications + Master's degree in journalism, filmmaking, media production, or communication. + Six or more years of professional media production experience across media organizations, platforms, or formats (e.g., news, sports, documentary, streaming, or narrative film). + Record of teaching excellence and innovation in media production. + Demonstrated collegiality and leadership in academic or professional media programs. + Success in building external and financial partnerships that support student learning initiatives and opportunities. + Record of professional engagement through creative production, festival participation, or service to regional or national organizations (e.g., BEA , SPJ , NPPA , International Documentary Association). + Experience in equipment oversight, technology acquisition, and management of media production labs and studios. + Knowledge of emerging production technologies and practices in artificial intelligence, streaming, live event coverage, and multimedia storytelling.
