Job Description

The International School of San Antonio is seeking a dedicated and dynamic  English Language Arts and Reading teacher to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to and help shape the development of the English subject within a dynamic, multilingual learning environment.

The ideal candidate will be well-versed in the Science of Reading and experienced in delivering evidence-based reading instruction. The English teacher will collaborate closely with immersion language teachers (French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese) to reinforce literacy and content across languages and subject areas.

This role includes teaching English classes to Pre-K students in our Early Learning Program and to students in kindergarten through 5th grade in our Primary School program. Instruction will focus on developing foundational literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. The teacher will also support oral language development and critical thinking through engaging, age-appropriate content and cross-curricular connections. In addition, the role includes teaching Math in English once a week to Upper Elementary students, fostering problem-solving, numeracy, and mathematical reasoning aligned with our international curriculum.

  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports multilingual learners.
  • Design differentiated lessons to meet diverse student needs and developmental levels.
  • Monitor student progress through formative and summative assessments.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to align instruction and support student learning.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and classroom activities.
  • Provide effective math instruction that promotes problem-solving, conceptual understanding, and numeracy skills in line with the school’s curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons that align with ISSA’s curriculum and instructional goals.
  • Teach English Language Arts to students from Pre-K through 5th grade, following the school’s curriculum map and the principles of the Science of Reading.
  • Teach Math in English to Upper Elementary students (Grades 2–5) once a week.
  • Ensure the safety and physical well-being of all students, both in the classroom and on school grounds.
  • Differentiate instruction based on students’ developmental stages, learning profiles, and academic needs.
  • Foster positive relationships with parents and promote ongoing partnerships between home and school.
  • Maintain consistent communication with families regarding student progress, behavior, and classroom updates.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across language programs to support interdisciplinary learning and ensure curriculum continuity.
  • Use a variety of assessment methods to monitor student growth and identify academic strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and assessment data.
  • Contribute to a respectful, inclusive, and professional working environment.
  • Create and maintain a clean, organized, and inviting classroom that encourages student independence and exploration.
  • Supervise students during school activities, transitions, and recess, ensuring their safety at all times.
  • Participate in professional development workshops and trainings to stay current with best practices in education.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by school leadership.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds, as required in a school setting.

Qualifications

We are seeking an experienced ELAR (English Language Arts and Reading) teacher who enjoys working in a diverse, international environment. Experience in international schools, particularly those authorized for the IB PYP program, is highly preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree  required , preferably in Elementary Education, English, or a related field from an accredited university; a Master’s degree and/or teaching certification is a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience, preferably in a language immersion or international school setting.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering engaging, student-centered lessons within a transdisciplinary curriculum framework.
  • Strong understanding of child development stages and the social-emotional needs of young learners.
  • Excellent classroom management skills and ability to foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment.
  • Comfortable teaching in mixed-age, multilingual classrooms.
  • Proficiency in a second language is preferred.
  • Must pass a background check.
