Job Description

FIRST GRADE TEACHER 

JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO:

Head of Lower School 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working closely with colleagues in the Lower School, the First Grade Teacher will teach language arts, mathematics, and social studies to a self-contained class of up to 18 students, promoting high levels of learning through engaging and effective instruction using a variety of instructional methodologies and curriculum resources.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

● Experience as an early childhood educator in a culturally responsive classroom environment with high expectations for student performance 

● A bachelor’s degree in primary education or a related field is required; advanced degree preferred 

● Proven ability to differentiate reading and math instruction to reach all levels of learners, including learning centers and experiential learning activities. 

● Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum through the use of ActivBoard hardware, Smart Board software, and other relevant platforms. 

● Experience and collaborative spirit in developing ideas and teaching strategies with a grade-level team and other members of the Lower School, including Fine Arts, World Language, Library, Technology, Physical Education, and Science. 

● Experience teaching with leveled reading materials, Everyday Mathematics, and standards-based thematic units, as well as current knowledge of children’s literature and formal/informal assessment strategies, is preferred. 

● Experience consulting with parents of high-achieving students and demonstrated ability to communicate student progress in academic and social-emotional domains, both in direct conversation and in writing

● Proven positive working relationships with colleagues, students, and families 

● Proven organization skills & excellent communication skills both written and verbal 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AS REQUIRED: 

● Participate in co- and extra-curricular activities as necessary

● Support the school, its mission, and its leadership 

● Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
