Job Description

1.0 POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The Lead Formulator is responsible for developing, preparing, processing, and evaluating laboratory samples as per established procedures to meet customers’ expectations for different markets. In this role the use of SOP’s and oversight of these processes is critical as well as ability to work with different teams to advance – powder coating technologies and innovation of Vitracoat Inc.

2.0 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Formulate new products for small batches and improve existing formulations using established templates. Test as requested on Laboratory Work Requests (LWR)

· Work in an efficient way to meet customer expectations

· Having a very good understanding of algebra

· Weight and blend raw materials per written formula with strong attention to material identification, weights, and conditions of the blend.

· As needed, extrude, grind and sieve materials, apply and bake with attention to equipment settings and safety protocols

· Perform coating characterization tests as per established ISO, ASTM and internal procedures

· Maintain clear and up to date technical data, laboratory notebooks, project and formulation records

· Maintain work area and equipment in good working conditions

· Other duties as required by the supervisor

· Some administrative tasks will be necessary to support the laboratory

· Work under the direct supervision of the VP of Technology or Technical Director or Laboratory Manager or Group Leader

· Train and mentor Process and Laboratory Technicians providing guidance and support as needed.

· Maintain a safe and clean work environment

· Support the plant with process needs and quality requirements, including product adjustments

3.0 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No direct supervisory duties but the Lead Formulator provides functional guidance to 1 to 3 technicians.

4.0 POSITION ACCOUNTABILITY

This individual will be expected to work in a group environment under the supervision of a team leader. He/she will be expected to use good judgment, and ethical decision-making abilities when testing and reporting data obtained during laboratory testing.

5.0 QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.

6.0 TRAVEL

This position might require up to 5% of travel time. International and/or national travel is required to visit customers and the different Vitracoat plants.

7.0 EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

· High School diploma is a must.

· A minimum of 3 years formulating powder coatings and some college is required.

· A minimum of 7 years formulating power coatings is required without college education.

· Organizational skills essential

· Spanish speaking is a plus

· Good verbal communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team or under direct supervision are essential

· Basic Microsoft Excel and Word knowledge is required

8.0 PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must be able to communicate clearly with others and must be physically able to stand, walk, reach, climb or balance, and kneel. The employee must be able to occasionally lift or move up to approximately 25 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision and color vision.
