Job Description
Position Summary:
Under the direction of a Supervisor or his/her designees, the Maintenance Technician performs a variety of maintenance and engineering duties including maintaining, repairing, operating, and renovating plant and facilities for the Engineering Department. Incumbent is guided by a basic knowledge of building trades, carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and mechanical repairs, plant maintenance methods, techniques and procedures, operation and use of department equipment and supplies. The Maintenance Technician works with the Plant Operations Supervisor who may provide general daily work assignments and oversight of tasks performed.
Education, License & Cert:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Licenses: Must have valid driver’s license required for travel to various facilities and/or use of a snow plow.
During orientation period, employee maybe required to participate in a "Powered industrial truck operators" course (#78‐199 published by NIOSH) and be able to interpret and exercise all information and rules set forth in the regulations. This must be renewed by incumbent annually.
Experience:
1. Two years of trade school required, or five (5) years comparable related experience.
2. A demonstrated skill in one trade and basic understanding of other trades acquired through on‐the‐job training.
3. Must have knowledge of all applicable OSHA standards, i.e., Right‐to‐Know, Lock‐out Tag‐out, ladder safety, and other standards that may apply.
4. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations is required.
5. The ability to make decisions and meet deadlines is required.
6. Must be able to read, comprehend, and transmit complicated, detailed instructions in writing and orally for effective interaction with administrative, medical, and supervisory staff, patients, architects, contractors, and vendors.
Essential Functions:
1. Performs a variety of other semi‐skilled and skilled work in various crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, painting, wall repair, flooring repair, electrical work, sheet metal work, masonry, machinist work, etc.
2. Cleans, lubricates, services, repairs, installs, and diagnoses malfunction of HVAC equipment, sterilizers, dietary equipment, sprinkler and standpipe systems, electrical systems and other plant and specialty equipment.
3. Constructs, finishes, installs, maintains and repairs equipment, systems and facilities related to any craft or combination of same, using power and hand tools and other necessary equipment in a clean safe operating condition in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations as well as department policy.
4. Assists in making decisions on all normal and minor repairs and reports major problems to the Plant Operations Supervisor.
5. Reads blueprints and models to learn work layout and plans own work layout, making routine computations as needed and attends mandatory in‐services as required.
6. Plans installations, does layouts, fabricates, recommends material and alternate methods of installation.
7. Identifies system failures and troubleshoots equipment in detail to restore to operating or contain problem.
8. Works alone to solve problems, and when called upon, can take the lead on a given job with another Maintenance Technician.
9. Maintains logs, performs rounds, and completes p.m. work orders, tests, and inspections. Makes recommendations for modification or improvement of preventive maintenance systems.
10. Demonstrates cost effectiveness by: proper use and care of equipment; appropriate and prudent use of supplies; accurately recording labor and supply charges and appropriately utilizing available resources.
Other Duties:
1. Maintains shops, mechanical spaces, patient areas, etc. in a clean safe manner.
2. Responds to emergencies in the facility, makes emergency repairs as needed and is part of weekend/holiday rotation to provide 24/7 coverage of the Power Plant and Hospital.
3. Assists in removing snow from facilities grounds and maintains grounds as required.
