Job Description

Job Title: Network Security Engineer Job Overview

We are seeking a Network Security Engineer with strong cybersecurity fundamentals, hands-on experience with threat detection tools, and the ability to respond quickly and effectively to security incidents. The ideal candidate will have solid analytical skills, experience leveraging threat intelligence, and familiarity with network security tools-especially those within the Cisco security ecosystem. Experience supporting government or state agencies is a plus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor, analyze, and respond to network security incidents using established procedures.

  • Apply threat intelligence to proactively identify, anticipate, and mitigate potential risks.

  • Utilize industry-standard detection tools to identify intrusion attempts, malicious activity, and anomalies.

  • Participate in incident response investigations, containment, remediation, and reporting.

  • Support continuous improvement of detection, alerting, and response capabilities.

  • Communicate findings clearly through written reports and verbal briefings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with IT operations, security teams, and agency partners to ensure coordinated incident handling.

Minimum Required Skills & Experience
  • 3+ years of experience working in cybersecurity or network security roles.

  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles , including:

    • Intrusion detection

    • Incident response

    • Threat intelligence

    • Attack vectors and mitigation strategies

  • Experience leveraging threat intelligence to inform detection and defense strategies.

  • Hands-on experience with industry-standard detection tools and analysis techniques.

  • Ability to think critically and make effective decisions under high-pressure or time-sensitive conditions.

  • Strong understanding of evolving cyber threats and defensive security practices.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Cisco security suite (e.g., Cisco Firepower, Cisco SecureX, Cisco ISE, Cisco Umbrella).

  • Knowledge of the Texas State Red Book or other formal incident response frameworks.

  • Prior experience working within a Texas State Agency or similar government environment.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting, documentation, and collaboration.
