Title: R&D Manager

Location: Billerica, MA

Hours: Monday through Friday, full time (7:30 or 8 am start)

Salary: $130k - $160k plus benefits

Summary : The R&D Manager will lead a team of chemists and technicians while actively participating in hands-on formulation and development work. This role is responsible for managing formulation projects across a range of adhesive chemistries, including epoxies, urethanes, UV-curable systems, silicones, acrylics, and hybrid technologies.

Responsibilities of the R&D Manager

• Lead and develop objectives for the R&D team, providing mentorship, training, and technical guidance.
• Oversee site with 2 R&D Chemists and R&D Lab Techs.
• Manage and oversee the full life cycle of R&D projects from conception to completion.
• Design, develop, and improve new and existing products, incorporating customer feedback and industry trends.
• Ensure lab efficiency and cost-effectiveness, overseeing sample fulfillment, optimizing workflows, and maintaining safety and security protocols.
• Develop and maintain testing methods to assure product and process quality, establishing standards and confirming manufacturing processes.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with sales, finance, quality, and manufacturing to successfully transition new products from R&D to market.
• Provide technical support to the sales team, assisting with customer inquiries, refining requirements, and strategizing product development.
• Maintain laboratory equipment by coordinating maintenance and repairs, ensuring compliance with manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols.

• Strong organizational and time management abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Comprehensive industry knowledge, including competitive product chemistry, trends, and forecasts.
• Thorough understanding of applicable regulations, test methods, and R&D procedures.
• Occasional travel required

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred).
• 5-8 years of relevant industry experience, with 3-5 years in a senior technical role (Sr. Chemist or higher).
• Supervisory experience is required.
• Experience in Epoxy chemistry required.
• Experience in R&D, formulation, and reverse engineering preferred.
• Strong understanding of formulation, testing, and product approval processes.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Additionally, prolonged periods of standing and working at a lab bench.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
