Position Overview

The Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem Speech Teacher understands and promotes the school’s mission, vision, objectives, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. The Speech Teacher is responsible for providing a classroom/instructional program that supports the individual needs of all children in accordance with the school’s mission and values established by the school.

Position Summary:

The Speech/Language Pathologist assists in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. To respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, The Speech/Language Pathologist addresses expressive (verbal and written), receptive (auditory and reading comprehension), and collateral language deficits (e.g., social/pragmatic, articulation, fluency, voice, etc.) so that every citizen can fully access opportunities at SWCSH and thrive.

The Speech and Language Pathologist will:

  • Conduct speech, language, and hearing screenings and diagnostic evaluations to determine the need for clinical services. 
  • Provide small group, individual, and push-in services that are tightly aligned to IEP goals and the general education curriculum in the areas of language, articulation, and fluency.
  • Assist in the development of standards-driven IEPs, maintain organized case files on each citizen with an IEP, ensure all services follow mandates, attend IEP meetings, and collect multiple sources of data on citizens progress to maintain goals and standards.
  • Provide teachers with strategies and interventions for struggling citizens.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and others concerning the needs of students and special services that are available.
  • Refer students and their families to appropriate community agencies and services.
  • Cooperate with agencies serving students and their families. 
  • Provide therapy, follow-up, and/or consultation based on student IEP's. 
  • Motivate students through effective communication and evaluative feedback.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the needs of students and provide for individual differences. 
  • Set high expectations for student achievement and behavior. 

Academic & certification qualifications 

  • Bachelors’ Degree required; Masters’ Degree preferred.
  • Certification in Speech and Language Pathology
  • Current New York State Teaching Certificate
  • At least two years of experience 

Successful Candidates Will:
