Job Description

Our client is seeking a highly motivated Electrical Distribution Systems Engineer with a strong understanding of 12 kV or higher utility electrical systems. This role is critical to the reliable operation of our campus electrical infrastructure. You’ll work independently and in collaboration with engineering, operations, and external contractors to support the installation, maintenance, and operation of protection systems and relays. Familiarity with Schweitzer Electric (SEL) relays is a plus.

Type: 1-Year Contract

Pay: $31.00/hr. - $36.00/hr.

Location: Chapel Hill, NC

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00am-4:00pm ; must be available for emergency call-ins, nights, weekends and holidays.

**This is a designated Emergency Duty & Communicable Disease Mandatory position. You will be working both indoors and outdoors, in varied conditions including high voltage and industrial areas.

Key Responsibilities:

• Apply electrical protection principles to high-voltage utility systems (12 kV+).
• Interpret and work from engineering drawings, vendor manuals, and diagrams.
• Assist in installation, testing, troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of relays and control systems.
• Utilize Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to create reports and documentation.
• Collaborate with operations teams, engineers, and contractors to manage project schedules and ensure operational efficiency.
• Maintain detailed records of modifications and calibrations.
• Respond to system emergencies, outages, or failures during and outside of business hours.
• Ensure compliance with NESC, NEC, OSHA, and university safety policies.
• Work safely in various environments including industrial, elevated, and confined spaces.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Working knowledge of electric utility distribution systems.
• Ability to prioritize and meet project deadlines independently.
• Strong attention to detail—accuracy is critical to protect multimillion-dollar equipment.
• Must be physically able to bend, climb, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in varied conditions (heat, cold, heights, industrial environments).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Passed NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam; EIT credentials.
• Experience working on a municipal or university underground utility electrical system.
• Familiarity with Schweitzer Electric (SEL) relays and control systems.
• Experience in an emergency response or critical infrastructure role.
