Job Overview
The Marine Surveyor will be responsible for providing professional, independent, and impartial inspection services across a range of marine and cargo operations. This position specializes in dry bulk cargo surveys, hold cleanliness inspections, draft surveys, on/off-hire bunker and condition surveys, P&I investigations, and containerized cargo claims inspections. The role requires a strong knowledge of marine operations, cargo handling, vessel structures, and international shipping regulations to ensure accuracy, compliance, and protection of client interests.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Dry Bulk Cargo Surveys: Conduct inspections of bulk carriers during loading and discharging operations, ensuring cargo quality, condition, and quantity meet contractual specifications.
· Hold Cleanliness Inspections: Verify vessel holds are prepared to industry and charterer standards for intended cargo, documenting any deficiencies or non-compliance.
· Draft Surveys: Perform precise draft readings and calculations to determine cargo quantities loaded or discharged, including adjustments for trim, list, ballast, and water density.
· On/Off-Hire Bunker & Condition Surveys: Inspect and document vessel condition and bunker quantities during charter delivery and redelivery, ensuring accurate reporting for charter party obligations.
· P&I Investigations: Conduct investigations into incidents such as cargo damage, loss, or personal injury on behalf of Protection & Indemnity Clubs, providing clear reports with findings and recommendations.
· Containerized Cargo Claims Inspections: Inspect damaged containerized cargo, document causes and extent of damage and provide professional assessments for claims resolution.
Qualifications and Background
· Prior Marine Surveying or Seagoing Experience, including exposure to hull & machinery, cargo claims, P&I surveys, and port operations.
· Strong knowledge of cargo handling, stowage, securing standards (e.g., IMO CSS Code), draft survey methodology, and bunker transfer practices.
· Familiarity with marine risk assessment and accident investigation protocols.
· Proficiency in technical report writing, digital inspection tools, and marine software applications.
· Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with strong observational skills and attention to detail.
· Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with shipowners, charterers, agents, insurers, and other stakeholders.
· Ability to work independently in dynamic environments and adapt to varying operational demands.
· Current TWIC card required for facility access.
Work Environment
· Remote position with the opportunity to collaborate with survey teams across the U.S.
· Frequent travel to vessels, shipyards, cargo terminals, and industrial sites.
· Fieldwork may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
· Flexible working hours are required to align with vessel schedules and project timelines.
· Regular use of digital reporting tools, photo documentation, and electronic communication platforms.
