Fabrication Draft Tech
Summary
We are seeking a skilled Drafting/Design Technician to join our team in the steel fabrication industry. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating accurate technical drawings, fabrication plans, and 3D models using CAD software. They will collaborate with project managers, and fabrication teams to ensure designs meet project specifications, industry standards, and production requirements. This role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of steel fabrication processes, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Function
The design tech role is a draftsperson's position with many responsibilities. It is therefore important to have a diverse skill set, including:
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Assisting department project manager in the role of clerical functions, estimating functions, designing drawings, issuing drawings, maintaining an even and consistent workflow.
- Create detailed shop drawings, fabrication plans, and 3D models using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SDS2 Revit, and or advanced steel).
- Interpret engineering blueprints and architectural drawings to develop accurate and precise designs.
- Collaborate with internal fabrication shop, and project managers, to ensure designs align with project specifications and fabrication standards.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, building codes, and company guidelines in all designs.
- Maintain accurate documentation and drawing records for fabrication and construction teams.
- Identify and troubleshoot potential design issues to optimize efficiency in the fabrication process.

Duties and Tasks
- Develop detailed shop drawings and fabrication plans using CAD software (AutoCAD, SDS2, Revit, and or advanced steel).
- Interpret engineering and architectural drawings to create precise steel fabrication designs.
- Ensure all drawings adhere to industry standards, and project specifications .
- Collaborate with department project managers to address design challenges and modifications.
- Review and revise drawings as needed.
- Maintain organized records of drawings, revisions, and project documentation.
- Stay updated on industry trends, fabrication techniques, and CAD software advancements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Measures of Performance
- Accuracy of Drawings – Produces precise and error-free shop drawings that meet project specifications and industry standards.
- Timeliness of Deliverables – Completes drafting tasks within project deadlines, ensuring no delays in fabrication or construction.
- Compliance with Standards – Ensures all designs adhere to current AISC standards, and AWS standards, and company guidelines.
- Collaboration and Communication – Effectively communicates with department project managers, and office staff to ensure competency.
- Efficiency and Productivity – Manages workload effectively, balancing multiple projects while maintaining high-quality output.
- Attention to Detail – Maintains an elevated level of precision in all drawings, minimizing the need for revisions.
- Adaptability and Continuous Improvement – Responds well to feedback and stays updated on industry trends and software advancements to enhance performance.
Work Environment
- Primarily an office setting with extended periods of computer and CAD software use.
- May require occasional overtime to meet project deadlines.
Physical Demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting while working at a computer and using CAD software.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for drafting, typing, and manipulating design tools.
- Occasional lifting or carrying of drawings, documents, or small equipment (typically up to 25 lbs).
- Visual acuity required for detailed design work and reviewing technical drawings.
- Occasional standing, walking, or bending during site or shop visits.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) , such as safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and hard hats, when visiting fabrication shops or construction sites.
Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Monday through Friday 7:30am-4:30pm. Evening and weekend work may be required.
Travel
This position requires no travel.
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum 5 years – drafting and design experience in AEC.
- Minimum education - high school diploma
- Proven record of accomplishment of successfully completing and maintaining projects.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent (degree in Architectual technology is a plus).
